A Thriller

Brussels, 21 May 2026. In a glass booth at the back of the hall sits Vera Amsel, conference interpreter for twenty-seven years, eleven thousand hours behind the pane. A man reads out his own paragraph: "We guarantee that the batch goes exclusively into the technical cycle." Vera renders it: "… in particular." One word. Nobody in the room notices. Every other booth takes relay from her, the minutes follow her version, the tapes are erased after thirty days.

Only Ruben hears it, her booth partner of nineteen years. For the seventh time. In nineteen black notebooks he has counted the days Vera sat on relay. Six of the men she interpreted on those days are dead.

What Ruben does not know: Vera has a diagnosis. Her hearing is going; in two or three years the booth is over. And in a basement in The Hague a young archivist begins digitising a hundred and four boxes of old tapes on which one voice keeps returning. She calls it "the precise one".

It all began on a November day in 1996, when nine men heard a word that had not been spoken, and said nothing.

BLACKBIRD is a thriller without a detective: the confession of a woman who never added a thing. She only took, cut, shifted. Like the blackbird that sings what it hears.

"You would be amazed what men say when they believe the woman behind the glass is a machine."

A thriller by THE ROSE.
